Pig digestive diseases can cause serious economic losses to the pork industry. With the development of pig production in China becoming more and more mature, the competition is becoming more and more fierce. Cost reduction, efficiency improvement, especially cutting the economic loss caused by digestive diseases have drawn more and more attention from pig producers.

As one of the major digestive diseases of pigs, Ileitis, also known as porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE), is a common contact intestinal disease of pigs caused by intracellular Lawson bacteria (Lawsonia Intracellularis） infection characterized by adenomatous hyperplasia of immature intestinal cells in the crypts of the ileum and colon. The disease could occur all year round, but mainly in the hot and rainy season. The incubation period of natural infection is 8-10 days, mainly in weaning pig to adult pigs. Especially, 6-16 weeks of age growing and fattening pigs are the most susceptible, which mainly causes slow growth rate, decrease in daily gain, low feed conversion rate, poor appetite, and pale skin. It has caused huge economic losses to the pig production industry, especially the intensive pig farms.

Ileitis has a history of > 70 years with high incidence, wide spread, and global prevalence. Ileitis prevalence ranges from 5-40%, and the mortality rate is not high, generally 1%-10%. But the growth rate of pigs decreases significantly, and the mortality rate can be as high as 40%-50% if caused by secondary infection. Proliferative ileitis occurs all over the world, especially in Europe and the United States. Breakouts are also often observed in Asian countries. In recent years, ileitis has shown a spreading trend in intensive pig farms in China. Improving the overall health level of pigs, growth rate of nursery and fattening pigs, and whole process survival rate have become an important concern for producers to maintain economic benefits and sustainable development. While fighting for major diseases such as African swine fever, more attention has been given to economically important diseases like ileitis.In China, understandings and research of ileitis is limited. The ability of clinical prevention and control, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease is relatively weak. With the expansion of pig industry in China, the damages caused by the disease will become more significant.

The International Pig Digestive Diseases Symposium (IPDDS) will focus on ileitis, while taking into account of other pig digestive diseases. Besides two-day’s main conference on ileitis, the event also features half-day pre-symposium forum onPorcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED), Porcine Rotavirus Disease (PRV), E. Coli, and salmonellosis. IPDDS invites world renowned speakers to share their expertise on ileitis covering topics like: pathogenesis and epidemiology, pathogen-host interaction, diagnosis, prevention and treatment, clinical practice，and research progress. Enterprises will also be invited to share cases on ileitis prevention and control. The goals of the IPDDS are to enhance the systematic understanding and prevention and control skills of farm staff on ileitis and other digestive diseases and provide professional training for pig producers to improve their knowledge and practical skills, so as to improve pig producers’ economic returns and competitiveness.
